2021 Keynote Lecture Vol.1
Behind the Scenes of Artistic Creation

Hsu Chia-Wei is good at dealing with complex contexts using video narratives. Starting from focusing on "people" and "places," he connects heterogeneous cultures such as humans, organisms, and virtual networks through networking, exploring the historical scenes that are overlooked or neglected.

His works often contain cross-national, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary collaborations. For example, the "Huai Mo Village" project drew materials from the border between Thailand and Myanmar, and cooperated with the interested parties from the perspective of an outsider; and the five-channel video work "Black and White - Giant Panda" was commissioned and completed in collaboration with Japanese comic artists; the "Marshal Tie Jia" project even invited Marshal Tie Jia to participate in the process.

In addition to planning carefully in advance, these projects also require the artist's flexibility on responding to occasions, as well as the artist’s keen intuition and judgement, in order to accurately present the essence of the complex historical context and materials. In this lecture, Hsu Chia-Wei will share his creative practice, talk about the entire process from inspiration to execution, and in-depth decrypt the practical aspects of visual art creation, allowing the audience to get a glimpse of the behind the scenes of artistic creation, and learn more about how he develops and creates new narratives and actions with each project.
